The Vault
Sorry I have not written in a while. With football season over I just have a hard time writing the full articles I usually do but I will try to write as often as I can for the rest of the year. Apologies again.
1. Georgetown-North Carolina matchup was a good game and the bottom line was, did Carolina choke or Georgetown win it? Both. North Carolina went 1 for 23 down that last stretch and just could not get the job done. But Georgetown took advantage of the opportunities and won the game. It was sloppy play and I don't understand why Carolina went for a three with the game tied. They are a young team though and will be a dominant force in the next few years. The irony though that Georgetown beats Carolina for revenge from that game back in 1982.
2. Florida head coach Billy Donovan now is being mixed in for the next head coaching job at Kentucky. Should he go. Unless there are reasons he cannot get along with the AD or president at his school, I would stay. He has a lot of control at his current school and a lot of support. Why go to Kentucky? I know it is like a glamour job, a high profile college BB job but it is not without setbacks. If Tubby Smith is going to Minnesota with four years left, then you know there are issues there. No disrespect to Minnesota, but it is no where near the elite jobs in college BB. I mean, Donovan should not want to have that headache where he has got it made. There are also rumors he could be heading to the NBA. Forget that. Ask Tim Floyd, Rick Pitino, Lon Kruger or John Calipari if that worked out. I have heard people say that it is the opportunity to advance in the job. Then that means Dean Smith, John Wooden, Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski never advanced in their career. I don't feel people look at these guys and thinks man why did they not go to the NBA? They are legends and Hall of Famers. Their legacy can surpass any NBA coachif they accomplish what they need to. Donovan has reached the light. He has reached the big time. e does not need to leave.
3. Well Koby Bryant seems to be on a role. 4 straight games of 50 or more points and made ONLY 43 on Sunday. Is he selfish or is he doing what he needs to do to win. He has long had the selfish label ever since Shaq was forced out of LA. Kind of like A-Rod no matter what he does it will always be portrayed as a selfish act. But he needs to be dishing out 50 a night. That is the only way the LAkers can win. Will he win the MVP? No. I think the teams results also play into the MVP race and because of that Dirk Nowitzki because of his importance to the MAvericks and the record they have. Steve Nash will be second in the MVP race for the same reasons as Dirk. Kobe hasgot the numebrs but the team is not significantly better.
4. I support the troops and feel most of the men and women serving overseas have noble intentions. But what is happening with Pat Tillman is just bad. I am conflicted in this issue, because I am sure that there have been otehr soldiers who have been killed by friendly fire and proably not have been reported accurately as well. So because of the celebrity of Tillman it is highlighted while others have died in a similar manner. So I am sure his is not the only questionable friendly fire death. But another point is that the ARmy screwed this up by not saying to the family and meida it may have been friendly fire. I mean they just could have said that it might friendly fire or an enemy attack. That is all they would have had to say or they could have not commented at all and said we are still investigating. But as I recall there was a detailed story in Sports Illustrated the week after Tillman's death describing Tillman's squad being attacked and him dying as a result. Someone had to come up with a good detailed story like that but no they did it the hard way and if someone in fact did fire because he wanted a fight to start, the guy deserves to be punished to the max. The Tillman has a right to know.
5. Some people are criticizing the Knicks owner James Dolan for giving coach Isaiah Thomas an extension saying that the season should have played out. I don't it was really premature. For most coaches I would say 90% of them should not be fired after only one year. The Knicks have improved and are playing better than last year. That said, they do play in the Eastern Conference, one of the worst in the professional sports and they were in the final playoff spot when the extension was given, which is closer than what they were last year. Some did not think Thomas should have been coach but I said hey, they are his players he brought them here, now coach them and prove you thought they were the real thing. Put him on the hot spot.
6. I don't follow the NHL much anymore. I do not know who is in first place or what teams are in what conference or 5 NHL players maybe. But hockey is being brought to the center stage again because of the fighting issue. Hockey is always known for fighting and is a sport that does not really get the attention for fighting that other sports brawls get. NHL commish Gary Bettman says that fighting is always been a part of the game and it is not going to change. Personally I do not like the fighting. I mean there is a minor league hockey team in my hometown and I will always sit down when a fight happens and not give attention to two grown men hitting each other like my elemtary kids would do? Some pro-fight peolple say it is the way hockey polices itself, meaning there would be worse things that would happen if hockey was taken away from the game. Well I guess we can have grown men brawl in the streets and get slaps on the wrist and use the arguement that they are policing themselves so they will not shoot themselves with guns. I know that is a horrible way of putting it but it is the best I can do. The NHL needs to at least cut-down on the hard hits that have been showing up recently but I would vote for an ejection from the game all together for fighting. How am I supposed to explain to my kids why two grown men are fighting while two refs stand and watch for a while? I can't. Will you alienate some fans because of the fighting? Sure but if they come to a hockey game to see a fight, then they are not true hockey fans. Just a few losers with no life cheering two idiots duking it out.
