Hot seat for Dungy?

It appears that according to an Indianapolis newspaper, Colts head coach Tony Dungy is under pressure to succeed this year and win the Super Bowl or he should be fired.

For the longest time I have felt that Dungy was given a free pass because he is such a nice guy. Some felt this was what kept him from getting a NFL head coaching job earlier in his career and not because he was black.

I have felt because he is an extremely likeable guy that media and fans are not too critical of him. After last years tragedy with his son's suicide, we saw a mass of people coming for support from President Bush to Franco Harris. That is how much of a guy he is.

But let's look at his record over the last four years with the Colts and his six years with the Bucs. With the Colts he is 48-16 regular season record and with the Bucs he has a 54-42 record. With the Bucs his postseason record was 2-4 and with the Colts 3-4. Overall his record is 102-58 regular season and 5-8 playoffs.

The playoff record is what hurt Dungy the worst. But let's say that you looked at the numbers above and did not know it was Dungy's record. Or let's say it was a guy with none of the personality of Dungy. Would you say that this is a record that you would fire a coach by? I don't know but I feel a lot of general managers and owners around the league would love that record for their teams or their coach.

Yes I feel Dungy, does get away with some stuff for being a nice guy. But even if was not a nice guy, he does not deserve to be fired if he does not make the Super Bowl. I mean it took Bill Cowhler 14 years to win the Super Bowl, and you are only going to give Dungy 5?

If GM Bill Polian feels a need to change, I don't feel he will be professional and look at what he does on the field and not his personality. I don't feel he needs to do anything but if he does, he will approach it professionally.

Dungy's nice guy persona will not get in the way of making a change. After all, Tampa Bay fired him.
